Plainweaves
This fabric can be used for counted cross-stitch, counted thread,
hardanger, pulled and cut work. All plainweave fabrics are
created with
individual threads being woven over and under each other, similar
to the
basic weave of a basket. The fabric is generally an evenweave
meaning
there is an equal number of horizontal (weft) threads and vertical
(warp)
threads. The fabric count (number of threads per inch) ranges
from 10 to
40. The fabric originally was 100% linen, today however, it
comes in many
different fiber contents, such as, linen & cotton blends,
100% cotton,
cotton & rayon blends, polyacrylic, rayon & linen blends,
and the list goes
on. Plainweave fabrics are referred to by many names, the most
common is
Linen, however, the Zweigert brand of fabric has a different
name for each
size of linen, such as Dublin (25 count), Cashel (28 count),
Belfast (32
count), and Edinburgh (38 count). Other plainweaves are Lugana,
Jobelan,
Floba, Alma, etc. Kelsey's carries a wide variety of
colors in addition to the ones shown below.
